MFL Book Club: Las Bicicletas Son Para El Verano

8/6/2020

In this month's instalment of the MFL Book Club, I will be focusing on Fernando Fernán Gómez's Las Bicicletas Son Para El Verano. I must say, this book has a special place in my heart as it is not only the first Spanish book that I read on my teacher's recommendation, but also the book that I chose to analyse for my IRP Project as a part of my A-Level. If you are interested in learning more about the Spanish Civil War and its impact on the everyman, this book is for you! Today's recommendation of a medium through which to educate yourself about current issues affecting us is this video from Vox, "Protests aren't what they look like on TV" - particularly important in wake of this week's events.

MFL Book Club: Translation, A Very Short Introduction

25/4/2020

When, around this time last year, I began to draft up my personal statement, there was one particular thought that I came back to time and time again: how do we go about translating and indeed explaining nuances, be it cultural or linguistic, between languages? Naturally, this led me to think about the nature of translation as a whole and I decided to read to pick up Matthew Reynold's Translation: A Very Short Introduction in a bid to gain a better insight. As a break from texts which are in the respective languages I study, it is this book that I thought I would share with you today - which is accessible to anybody with a general interest in languages. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy this post and let's hop right on in!

MFL Book Club: Thérèse Desqueyroux

Another day brings another blog post here on EveryLittleThing and today's topic matter is none other than Mauriac's Thérèse Desqueyroux, a book which I admittedly have a soft spot for having studied it at the Eton College Universities Summer School. Without trying to sound like a broken record, now is the time to get all of that extra reading for your personal statement done or to simply immerse yourself in the language(s) that you are learning - for that, be sure to see more posts coming shortly in this series! In my usual fashion, I will give a brief synopsis of the book and then go on to share my thoughts with you. Without further ado, let's jump right in!

MFL Book Club: The Shadow of the Wind (La Sombra del Viento)

Upon reading the title of this post, you may well have thought to yourself: "What on earth is this girl doing?". Admittedly, I ask myself the same question quite frequently - and this post is exactly one of those times. By my own self-admission, I am no book blogger because quite frankly, I neither read frequently enough nor do I think that I'm all that competent at reviewing works of literature. Nonetheless, I've made it my mission to read more books in French and Spanish and wanted to share this journey with you to give a language learner's take on all of these works - and who knows, maybe I'll encourage you to pick them up too? To kick-start this series, I thought there would be no better novel than Carlos Ruiz Zafón's The Shadow of the Wind - the book that has propelled Zafón to become Spain's best-selling author following Cervantes. I hope you enjoy this post and, as always, feel free to leave a comment at the end!
