So, Have No Idea What You Want To Do In Life? Here's How to Start Career Planning in University

15/5/2021

Let me be perfectly honest with you, I've had a bit of a palaver this academic year in terms of career planning and thinking about where I want to focus my efforts as I head towards my second year of university. Slowly but surely, however, I think we're getting here. I'm aware of how stressful it may be to start thinking about career planning and your post-university endeavours, which is why I wanted to share some of the tips that have helped me out immensely. Of course, I am no expert on the matter —but sometimes it's nice to have a chat with someone that's closer to a friend than a careers adviser! On that note, I hope you enjoy this post and, as per usual, feel free to leave any thoughts in the comments section below.

The University Diaries: How to Save Money as a Student

1/12/2020

If there's one thing that university teaches us poor students (both in a literal and symbolic sense), it's that merely existing costs a pretty penny. That being said, I don't think it's time just yet to hold up our hands in defeat and succumb to the nutritious diet that is baked beans on toast and Pot Noodles. I'm sure you've heard of the saying 'when there's a will, there's a way' — and this is precisely one of those instances. Today, I'll be sharing a few ways that I have been keeping my costs down as a student — and I want to emphasise 'a few' here, because we could really be here all day! As always, if you have anything to add or comment upon, just scroll down to the comments section at the end of the post.

First-Year University Room Tour: How I Decorated My Room on a Budget

20/11/2020

Good evening my darlings, I hope you're all doing well. I must say, following a very hectic start to university, it has been nice to have the opportunity to return to this blog. Now, I am sure I am not the only one in thinking that one of the most exciting aspects about moving university is having the ability to start afresh. That not only spans to room decor, of course, but it is what I am going to be focusing on today. Is this post a little self-indulgent? Perhaps, but I am going to be sharing some tips along the way as to how you can upgrade your room on a budget. I do hope that you enjoy the post, and be sure to leave me any thoughts in the comments below as per usual.

For context purposes, I am a first-year undergraduate reading Spanish at University College London. Due to privacy reasons, I will not be sharing the name of the specific accommodation block that I am in, but I hope that you respect this decision.

The "Class of Covid": A Reflection On Starting University In 2020

23/10/2020

As I sit at my desk in my childhood bedroom with a cup of tea at hand, I still cannot believe that I have already been at university for a month, for I sometimes wonder if I'm even at university at all. This year has been defined by one defeating announcement after another, from that of a national lockdown to the cancellation of exams, and Zoom university fits right into the mix. It hasn't been all doom and gloom, don't get me wrong, but the experience could in many ways not be more different to that of my older peers. For that, I've decided to write a little post both entailing where I've been during this one-month hiatus and what this new experience has been like from the perspective of a first-year student. I hope you are all doing well and, as per usual, leave any thoughts in the comments below.

My UCAS Journey: Rejected from Oxford, Changing Course...?!

24/3/2020

As those of you following me on my Studygram will know, this academic year was the year in which I applied to university - and to say it's been a tumultuous journey would be quite the understatement! With the process now coming to a near-end, with all resting on my A-Level results (hasn't that become a sticky one?), I thought it would be the perfect time to share this very journey with you today - which, yes, involves the infamous Oxford rejection and an unexpected change of course. Although this post is very much about me sharing my personal journey, I am still keen for there to be something that you as a reader can take away - and for that, I will be telling you about some of the things I think I did well, as well as some of the mistakes that you can avoid for an overall better application experience. I ought to mention that this post was inspired by the lovely Eleanor Claudie - and let me tell you, if you haven't read her blog yet, you are missing out! Without further ado, let's jump right in!

How to Write a Competitive Personal Statement for Top UK Universities

22/3/2020

Well, well, well... where do I even begin? Admittedly, this post is one that was due to be posted a fair bit later - but given the government's announcement of school closures in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, I thought it was only right to hurry the posting process and get this out to both Year 12 and Year 11, for whom I feel a whole lot of sympathy towards right now in the wake of exam cancellations and/or potentially months worth of missed teaching time. Given the fact that I will now have a lot more free time as I will no longer be sitting my A-Level exams, I am dedicated to help keep the younger years on track and there will be a lot of blog content coming in these upcoming few weeks so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that. I am also more than happy to work with you on a one-to-one basis to provide you help with your personal statement if you wish - feel free to get in touch with me at @everylittlethingblog on Instagram! As for now, though, let's jump right into the subject matter of this post - which is all about personal statements! Get a cup of tea or coffee on hand, as this is going to be a long one...

Work Smarter, NOT Harder: How To Be More Productive & Get Shit Done

1/12/2019

I have to admit, the one question which I simply cannot stand receiving as a study blogger is the classic "How many hours should I be revising?" or anything along that train of thought. See, this is one of the main issues I have with the community as it stands; seeing as it's a little difficult to evaluate your work by how much you have been able to achieve and retain at a later date, we just tend to resort to hours as some sort of reliable measurement for productivity and, thus, success. The problem with this, though, is that one person could get the same amount of work done in 4 hours as another might in 8 - and no, it's not a question of natural ability, it's to do with how focused and efficient you've been. This was my greatest mistake at GCSE: it was almost as if I was on house arrest by my own accord, chained to my books, and quite frankly... I did nothing but make myself miserable - all the while not even retaining half of the information I was supposedly learning! Most of us have been here, at least in the latter scenario, but today I'm hoping to share some of my A-Level wisdom as to how you can get the most of your study sessions by doing more in less time - all the while retaining what you learn so that you have time to do the things that you enjoy. Gosh, that was a long introduction - but I hope you enjoy this post, and let me know your thoughts in the comments section below!

The BEST Memorisation Technique For GCSE/A-Level

16/4/2019

We've all been there: exam season is fast approaching and you have weeks, or maybe even days, until your exam- you know... the exam you haven't yet started revising for? This was the exact scenario that I was in last year two weeks before my GCSE Science Paper Two exams, but it was with this technique (as well as completing practice question after practice question) that I still managed to walk away with two grade 9's and an 8 in those very exams- and it is this method that I'll be sharing with you today. Though perhaps a little shorter than some of my other posts, I hope it is useful and as per usual do feel free to leave any thoughts in the comments below!
